Though I'm not a witch and more shamanic in nature,Tis all in the mind only or the notion that only fire is power & thus is strong, not so.. all other elements are just as strong in their own right.. depending on how you use them of course, incantations using crushed herbs over boiled hot water from a kettle in baths that infuse & vapor their natural essence & smell upwards & outwards are just as strong for cleansing rooms etc,and do no harm what so ever to animals or humans... but the power comes more so from your verbal magic spell chants and the adding of other things like sigils & talismans & the infusions of sacred objects to activate them, like crystals in grids, shaman stones, feather magic as well projections into the water itself, via scrying & also there is mirror magic, crystal ball gazing magic,... remember though water has its own consciousness,be careful with it..the other thing is you could remove your birds from the room when you wish to be at your alter, yet burning candles wont hurt the birds I assure you.. as I have had many birds including magpie, doves & parrots and all are healthy.

To anyone still active in this group: I am fairly new and I need advise from a Witch who also has birds.

I have several parrots and a dove who I adore and I am very strict when it comes to keeping them safe. I ban all perfume, fragrances, incense, and products with fumes (such as non-stick cookware) in my house. I also ban any open flames, such as candles because of the fumes they produce. I keep an unlit candle on my altar to honor the element of fire but I don't even own a lighter.

My question is, is there a way to practice magic without relying at all on incense and candles?

Most of the spells and rituals I've found involve one or both. I've thought about substituting with other elements, such as water instead of fire, but doing so doesn't seem like it'd produce the same effectiveness. There's so much history and power in the use of candles and incense; I'm at a loss on what to do.

Thank you for any thoughts or ideas!
