My brother is interested in Buddhism for sometime and I've decided to find out more and pass on the information to him. I hope that both me and him can become enlightened here. I know that it takes years but the journey, I heard, is well worth it.

This is a response to Qui a le coeur brise...

It is good that you recognize that the current patterns in your lifestyle may not be what you desire. There is a nature within that is asking for change. But going from one extreme to the other may not solve the issue at hand. You may want to contemplate whether or not a complete lifestyle change is useful in the end.

In response to your questions..

1) How much meditation should one do? Well, "should" is a word that can bring unnecessary obligations. "Should" often does not consider the conditions at hand. "Could" is a better approach being that it allows one to choose without unnecessary obligations. When one fails on obligations, it sets up for beating yourself up, as that is not beneficial. There is no hard and fast rule to how much one meditates is "enough"? Look into your conditions and see what is possible with your schedule at the moment. You know the answer.

Meditating during the morning is better for observing spaciousness within mind as you can observe the space inbetween thoughts. In the night, mind is far more active, so you may experience a lot more "Chatter (What we call "thinking")" within mind. Both are beneficial to observe.

2) Journaling can be a good way of observing thoughts and moods. However, I can't necessarily agree that it's meditating. Meditating in Buddhism, depending on what kind of meditation, is about observing mind, focus, or presence and awareness. Writing thoughts down and burning them after may be one's way of making themselve feel better, but it becomes a game of the "Cat chasing it's tail". The thinking, experiencing, and feelings that arise never cease. How much do you want to spend on journal paper??

I can suggest that while meditating, one can just sit and observe how the thoughts within come and go. There is no need to hold on to them or get involved with the scenarios, ideas, and thoughts that arise. Just simply "Watch". A lama once told me "Thoughts that arise within is like a piece of trash being blown from yard to yard. When it is in your yard, you dont have to ask "Who's trash is this? Why is this here?", or get angry about it and remove it. Just let it be. It's no one's trash. It'll blow away."

3) There's a Buddhist saying that help with this question...

"Do not speak, unless it improves on silence."

Meditation may help or it may not. Check it out and see if it works. Just be aware and observe. I am available to listen if you have any questions. Namaste! Svaha.

It should transcend personal God and avoid dogma and theology. Covering both the natural and the spiritual, it should be based on a religious sense arising from the experience of all things natural and spiritual as a meaningful unity. Buddhism answers this description...

I tried adding this as a discussion and couldn't for some reason. hopefully this get's seen.
So I'm new to Buddhism and meditating and all that. I dont' even know if Buddhist's monk take vows of silence or if I'm thinking of someone else. But I would like to try it.

I have a lot of stresses in my life right now. We live with my MIL. We have NO money. My marriage is on the brink. We have 3 young kids. 2 of which have special needs(I have 4 appts this week alone!). I HAVE to talk to drs, teachers, therapists, etc. But I would like to be "silent" and "still" as much as possible for a while. To just shut up. I talk a lot, and the more I talk the more worked up I get, the faster I go, the more I find to say. I call my mom every day and talk for no less than hr. I email several times a day. I will txt 5 people just to tell them I'm mopping the floor. I spend a LOT of time on the computer. I spend more time on the computer than I do with my kids(I know it's awful! But I admit it). I have a very short temper. I have no patience. I yell alot. I say unnecessarily mean spirited stuff to my husband. Just about anything and everything can and will and does set me off. I don't think I need drugs. I just need to learn to build up my patience. control my temper. control my tongue. i need to learn to shut up. And I think that include saying stuff that doesn't need to be said. Not just mean stuff, but stuff like "I'm mopping" or "waiting at the drs office" etc.

I want to start doing yoga, going on long walks outside, meditating, and journaling. I also want to vow to be "silent" unless necessary. I know that's a lot. I should probably "ease into it", but I've been trying that, and it's not working and it's too easy to slack off, and it's not enough. I'm at a critical point right now. It's either start earnestly taking care of my mental health and well being(and by proxy that of those around me), or lose what is left of my sanity.

Here are my questions. 1. what's the absolute minimum amount of meditation I should aspire to daily? When's the best time to meditate? Early morning, or late in the evening to quite the mind after a long day?(I'm leaning towards early morning before every-one's awake. otherwise I may not have the chance) 2. would journaling be considered meditating? Should I use actual pen and paper or would blog form be ok? I kind of think getting away from teh hum of the computer would be better, and I could take my journal everywhere with me. I want to write EVERYTHING in my journal. Sort of a food log, mood long, fertility chart. write all the crap I feel the need to call my mom about(housework and dr's appts). I also would like to burn said journal when it's full/or after a certain time frame. Whichever comes first. 3.) I will HAVE to talk to some people it's inevitable. But how can I make the most of I what I say? I tend to ramble and stutter and repeat myself often. I used to be much more coherent. but these days....As you can see. I'm wordy and don't know when to shut up. I need help!
