Advice needed on water logged laptop...

Alright, we had a dishwasher go out yesterday and water went all over the kitchen. It seeped through the floors and soaked my laptop. Yes, the laptop that contains the recordings of the album I've been working on for the last year and a half. Yes, the same recordings that I was getting ready to master and make available for downloads.

It has been 24 hours since and the laptop will power up, but, the screen isn't showing anything. I need to know two things: 1. Is there a way to trouble shoot and fix it? Or/ if not, is there a way to retrieve the information? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Don't fill it full of cooked or uncooked rice.

Maybe find someone who can swap out screens...

You should open it up and let it fully dry. After letting it dry for a couple of days, and if the screen still doesn't work, hook up an external monitor. If you are still down after that, remove the hard drive and install it in a different laptop long enough to recover you music.

It sounds like there's probably still moisture inside. I'd suggest unplugging it and removing the battery asap as there could still be the risk of shorting out. If you know how to disassemble a laptop you should likely do so and use a lint free cloth and some compressed air to wipe down areas then allow it to air dry for a couple of days before reassembling.

I hope you make backups or will do so from now on. You're very lucky it can turn on and (so far) not have lost any data. It can be expensive to have get someone to retrieve files from a damaged computer. Consider a redundancy, such as an external drive and cloud storage (because in this instance even if you had a backup on an external drive it could have been subject to the leak too).
