The Green Thing
In the line at the supermarket, the cashier told the older woman that she should bring her own grocery bag because plastic bags weren't good for the environment. The woman apologized to her and explained, "We didn't have the green thing back in my day."

The clerk responded, "That's our problem today. The former generation did not care enough to save our environment."

She was right, that generation didn't have the green thing in its day.

Back then, they returned their milk bottles, soft drink bottles and beer bottles to the shop. The shop sent them back to the factory to be washed and sterilized and refilled, so it could use the same bottles over and over. They were recycled.

But they didn't have the green thing back in that customer's day.

In her day, they walked up stairs, because they didn't have an escalator in every store and office building. They walked to the grocery store and didn't climb into a 300-horsepower machine every time they had to go two blocks.

But she was right. They didn't have the green thing in her day.

Back then, they washed the baby's nappies because they didn't have the throw-away kind. They dried clothes on a line, not in a 220 volt energy gobbling machine - wind and solar power really did dry the clothes. Kids got hand-me-down clothes from their brothers or sisters, not always brand-new clothing.

But that old lady is right; they didn't have the green thing back in her day.

Back then, they had one TV, or radio, in the house - not a TV in every room. And the TV had a small screen the size of a handkerchief, not a screen the size of a cricket pitch. In the kitchen, they blended and stirred by hand because they didn't have electric machines to do everything for you. When they packaged a fragile item to send in the mail, they used a wadded up old newspaper to cushion it, not Styrofoam or plastic bubble wrap. They didn't have air conditioning or electric stoves with self cleaning ovens.. They didn't have battery operated toys, computers, or telephones.

Back then, they didn't fire up an engine and burn fuel just to cut the lawn. They used a push mower that ran on human power. They used hand operated clippers to trim the shrubs. They exercised by working so they didn't need to go to a health club to run on treadmills that operate on electricity.

But she's right; they didn't have the green thing back then.

They drank from a glass filled from the tap when they were thirsty instead of using a plastic bottle every time they had a drink of water. They refilled their writing pens with ink instead of buying a new pen, and they replaced the razor blades in a razor instead of throwing away the whole razor just because the blade got dull.

But they didn't have the green thing back then.
Back then, people walked or took the bus and kids rode their bikes to school or rode the school bus instead of turning their mums into a 24-hour taxi service. They had one electrical outlet in a room, not an entire bank of sockets to power a dozen appliances. And they didn't need a computerized gadget to receive a signal beamed from satellites 2,000 miles out in space in order to find the nearest pizza joint.
But isn't it sad the current generation laments how wasteful the old folks were just because they didn't have the green thing back then?

"serves no real use"

wow, you really can't think of any uses for a lawn? I think your the one brainwashed.

Here's an easy one, we have a dog, dog is big, big dog likes to go outside....

So many other uses forca lawn!

In good weather you can do anything you want outside
When i moved in to this house some years ago all i had to mow the top 'lawn' (a stretch of field seperated from the rest by the graden wall) was a small push-n-groan mower that damn near broke my back!

Solution A - get an electric mower...expensive and repetitive on a job a heartily loathe.

Nix.

Solution B - buy a goat....too much hassel for a comparatively small patch of grass.

Nix.

Soluition C - rotavate the soddin' stuff and plant whatever i likes.

Result!

Now i keep a small patch of grass that also grows clover to provide good green mulch for the composter and a handy spot to fall onto when i have one too many beers in my hammock :))

But this 'Green Thing' is a relatively modern phenomenon that 'grandma' and her generation were unaware of, and much of the environmental ideas wre not generally taken up til the Seventies when it became fashionable to have a veggie garden and a recycling bin. Only in the past ten-twenty years has it become a necessity to recycle - and grandma didn't necessarily recycle due to an environmental awareness but more to do with the thrifty notion of getting money back on the bottle; not quite the same thing.

back in 'the good old days' people who held these environmental concerns were caricatured as sandal-wearing, lentil-eating, harmless loonies; dope-smoking hippies or wiccan weirdos. Their beleifs that Mother Nature was a holistic entity derided as nothing more than quaint superstition.

The growth of paganism has grown almost hand-in-hand with environmentalism and is one of the rare topics that a broad swathe of people; whether wiccan, satanist or any sub-culture you care to name, tends to agree.

What really ticks me off is the way goverment agencies have grown into the environmentalist movements in recent years, such as the carbon emissions lobby, to generate profits from the very people they once considered so laughable.

WOW !!!! Did this go all over the place .. I did not really under stand how the whole world lived and believed .. We are all so different and live the way the Heads of our country's says it has to be .. We all do the best we can do and try to live the way we think we should .. In the USA having a gun is just a freedom we have all ways had since the beginning of our country ..  We have used them to gain our freedoms here .. To hunt for food to ward off wild animals and people that wanted to cause us harm ... I am a woman and I have shot a gun and it was fun but I don't play with them any more  .. My Husband Hunts Deer and we harvest Deer every year .. If there is a sick or injured animal it is very quick death to put them out of their suffering .. Never ran across a animal with rabies but would come in handy to put them down too .. Also a quick death for your self if the need came up :)  ( Joking there ) but a lot of people shoot their selfs ,, But it is a Freedom and a Right to bear arms .. Can't fight a war with out them :)

Cars ???? LOL another freedom we can travel where ever we can afford to buy the gas to go .. Use to be horses and we have bikes and scooters and 4 wheelers ,Dune buggies Any things that can get us there faster and in comfort .. Or just feel the freedom of the wind in your hair going as fast as you can :)

Having a TV in every room comes in handy when things like 9-11 Happened .. You can do your house work and just listen to what is going on and not just sitting there in front of a tv  in one room watching .. I was all over my house with all the TV's on working and listening and watching some times .. Just another Freedom and a choice for each person .. having a lot of this or that is not good or bad .. We just all live a different life and that is what makes it so wonderful ..

I Posted this because it hit home with me ... I remember all the ways it use to be before we went this so called Green .. There is good and Bad in every thing .. Back when we had nothing but glass bottles there was a lot of broken glass and I could  not go bare foot because of the broken glass in the streets and side walks in the city .. But now we have a swirl of Plastic so big in the Ocean that will poison the water and wild life for hundreds of years ..   Back in the 1960's my time of growing up.. There was good and bad things ,,  Some things have gotten better and some things have gotten worse .. Some day it will all be over and so will this silly post that I put up ..

Live and Let Live . .Try to harm none but do what you will .. Bless you all and may only Love and Light come your ways ..  Thanks for posting :) Blessings Alice

conversations grow and evolve going places none planned when they started, hopefully we learn something from them

Do you see these views as being "green", Alice, considering this was your thread? What was the point of the thread again? =)

Tolerance and Love and Light, Pavlor. Don't pretend you did not get the point.
Thank You Hels' Marie :)  We are who we are and you are all wonderful in your own ways :)
oh please have mercy

*lol*

Then I have the freedom to jet over to Singapore and have breakfast with orangutans *on a whim*, right? I use air travel loads. My freedom, yay =)

as long as you're eating what they're eating and don't upset them....that could be dangerous you know!

I wasn't allowed to touch them, much to my chagrin =/
