I know it's an old post I'm replying to, but here goes.  Vodun and other diaspora belief systems are the basis of Obeah.  Obeah isn't really a belief system in and of itself, but an approach to them.

The traditional Vodun, Santeria, Kumina, etc. practitioner pretty much sticks to their own traditions, but the Obeah person is willing to incorporate techniques from others.  When they do though, the way they do it is distinctly African.

For example, where a western practitioner may summon a demon and give it orders, the Obeah practitioner would approach with humility and offerings.  They would learn something about who they were dealing with, ally themselves with them, and thus share power with them rather than presuming power over them.  So you understand why the success rate of genuine Obeah persons is so high.  Then of course, there is the use of scientific knowledge.

It is realistic and practical, but it is a little too real for some.  Obeah persons are hard core seekers and lovers of Truth, and their views are often offensive to some...but it works.

As i like to study world religions, this is a fascinating topic... If only more information was available to the laity.
