Day of Remembrance for Sigurd the Volsung

June (Midsummer - Midyear/Meadmoon - Ærre-Lithe - Solmanudhr) 9th

Day of Remembrance for Sigurd the Volsung

He is the model Germanic hero. His wooing of the Valkyrie Brynhild, the winning of the treasure of the Nibelungs, and the constant theme of Odinic initiation that weaves itself throughout his story are priceless parts of our Asatru heritage, that provide endless material for contemplation and inspiration for action.

On this day I try to remember many of the great… Continue

Lindisfarne Day

June (Midsummer - Midyear/Meadmoon - Ærre-Lithe - Solmanudhr) 8th

Lindisfarne Day:

On this day in the year 1043 Runic Era (793 CE) three Viking ships raided the Isle of Lindisfarne, officially opening what is generally called the "Viking Age". Toast these warriors who began the resistance of an alien religious invasion of the Northlands and sought revenge for the slaughter of thousands of Danish and Saxon Men, Women and Children by Charlamange. Thus the legend of the feared and… Continue

I know that this is not a European martial arts instructor or any kind of Asatru or Heathen, but he was a great teacher, a good man and a great inspiration to me and several of my instructors over the years so I am spreading the word.

Grandmaster Professor Wally Jay Has Died! Around 2:30am May 29, 2011 the martial arts community lost one of the great masters of our time. He will be truly missed by many around the world.

The Feast of Vali

Horning (February) 14th

The Feast of Vali

Many of the people that read these listing that I post look for the historical reference to the holidays. I would like to point out that todays listing is a modern Asatru holiday and although there can be found minor historical references to an event at this time of the year there is no true reference to any specific deity that was worshiped or extensive details about community activities that may have occurred. The Feast of Vali is a… Continue

Day of Remembrance for Eyvind Kinnrifi

February (Horning) the 9th

Day of Remembrance for Eyvind Kinnrifi

Eyvind Kinnrifi was a farmer of noble birth and a leader in Trondheim, Norway. Olaf tortured him to death by placing a bowl of red-hot embers on his stomach until his body burst open (although there are some historians that say he was actually Drowned with his loyal comrades). Eyvind’s crime was a steadfast loyalty to the Old Gods.

On this day of remembrance I try harder to practice what I preach when it… Continue

Barri / Disting / Charming of the Plow

February (Horning) the New Moon or the 2nd

Barri / Disting / Charming of the Plow

Disting is sacred to the female ancestors, to Freya, to Frigga and to rebirth. The earth was traditionally prepared for planting at this time, and local assemblies, or "Things," met to discuss legal matters and to give the people a chance to get together and socialize.

Charming of the Plow is the date of an agricultural ritual performed in Northern Europe from ancient times. Grains and cakes… Continue

Thorrablot (Thor's Feast)

January (Snowmoon - Æfter-Giuli - Thorri) 19th - 25th

Thorrablot (Thor's Feast)

This holiday began the Old Norse month of Þorri. Today this festival starts on the Friday of January between the 19th and 25th (the 13th week of winter in Iceland). Thorrablot (or Thor's Feast) is still observed in Iceland with parties and a mid-winter feast. It is, of course, sacred to Thor and the ancient Icelandic Winter spirit, Thorri. On this day a blot is dedicated to Thor; he who protects us from… Continue

Day of Remembrance for Raud the Strong

January (Snoowmoon - Æfter-Giuli - Thorri) 9th

Day of Remembrance for Raud the Strong

Raud was a landowner in Norway who was put to death by (St.) Olaf Tryggvason for his loyalty to Asatru by having a snake forced down his throat. Rauds lands were then confiscated in the name of the king and his monks. Raise a horn in honor of Raud and all of his kinsmen who gave their lives, rather then submit to the forced love of a medieval Christian empire.

Olaf Tryggvason was King of… Continue

Twelfth night of Yule

Frey took the kingdom after Njord, and was called drot by the Swedes, and they paid taxes to him. He was, like his father, fortunate in friends and in good seasons. Then began in his days the… Continue
