We have been in a nasty heat wave. Really nasty. I have a clowder of senior cats. While I can run around the house in a T shirt or nothing at all, they can't just slip out of their fur. With all the additional things wrong with the house it will be a long time, if ever, there will be central air. It will also be a long time before the attic  and any of the walls are insulated either. So I finally broke down and ordered a window air conditioner. At 48 pounds, I'll just be able to lift it to the window sill in the living room, without needing weeks of chiropractic. I really shouldn't have spent the money but sometimes you have to look hard at your priorities. Fans just aren't cutting it. If any of the cats became sick because it's too hot in this dump of a house, I would loose it completely.

Of course the next day thunderstorms and rain move in and cool things off. As usual the heavy rain went north or south of us. The cloud cover was nice though and distant thunder is a sound I enjoy. It was a day for lots of snuggling and the cats were quiet; that hot weekend took the starch out of them as much as it did me. We are not deceived by this break in the heat though, there is more to come. I'll need that air conditioner. I love my cats.

You sound like a very kind and responsible cat owner. I have one senior silver Persian cat. During this heat I keep a glass bottle of water in the fridge for her. She likes to drink very cold water and glass cools quicker than plastic.

May you and your cats all be well through this intense heat.

woo for cats! I have two myself...

Don't feel bad about spending the money on the AC. I know the feeling very well. My husband and I are used to living on one income (we seem to have a curse that only one of us can be employed at a time...) but there are some things we just NEED for our health and the health of our family, including our furry family, and in this summers worldwide heatwave, cool air is one of them! it will continue to come in handy in the future so I personally think it is a great investment on your part!

if you have a basement then opening the door to it and allowing the cats down there will help a lot as it is SIGNIFICANTLY cooler down there. When we lived in Maine we were in a very old house we were trying to fix up and had no AC. We were used to heat (being from southern AZ originally) but the humidity was killer... we often spent a lot of time in the basement just sitting and reading during the day because it was a good 10-15 degrees cooler down there.
